Almost Never Boring…

Memories of fun times… 31 March 2007

I was talking to a friend this evening, and something he said reminded me of the following story.  I told him about it, and thought y’all might like to hear it too.  😀

When I worked at Yellowstone, my friend Ryan had a blue enamel pot for making stew and whatnot while he was camping.  One day he left it in the laundry room (there was a big sink in there that folks would use to wash dishes) and when I found it there, I washed it and took it back to my office so that it wouldn’t get stolen.  Then I left a note on his door letting him know that his “pan” was in my office and he should come get it.  When he got off work and found the note, Ryan dropped into the office to pick up his pot, but made a big deal of informing me that it was a “pot” not a “pan.”  I told him that I had put “pan” instead of “pot” because of the obvious connotations associated with the word, but Ryan insisted I should call it by its proper name.  The next day I left a note on his door that said “Ryan, thanks for getting your pot out of the office, I was rather uncomfortable storing it for you,” (or something along those lines).  Ryan thought it was quite funny, and he ended up leaving it on his door for quite some time.

And as long as I’ve told a story about Yellowstone, I might as well share a couple pictures…  Ryan is the guy in the blue shirt on the very top of the stack in the first photo.

just won a bronze medal in the UCI track world cycling championships.  His name is Brad Huff and he’s the first male to medal for the USA at an elite world track championship in nine or 11 years, depending on what article you read.  Check out the story here and here.   Congrats, Brad!

Hidden Blessings… 16 March 2007

Tonight I finally got into spring cleaning mode.  So far, I think my house looks even worse than it did when I started, but there is method to the madness, and there are already a few organized areas amongst the chaos.  One of the many tasks I accomplished tonight was sorting through all of the old mail that had been tossed into my “mail basket” where I put items that need to be shredded rather than just thrown away.  As I was sorting through this mail, I ran across a pay envelope from the temp company I worked for over a year ago that had never been opened.  I always have my paycheck directly deposited into my checking account, so I knew it wasn’t a check.  For some reason, I decided to open the envelope before throwing it away.  When I opened the envelope, I found a note congratulating me on being chosen as one ofthe employees of the month, and included in the envelope was a $20 gift card to Target!  I was shocked!  Especially because I almost threw the envelope away without even opening it.  Crazy!

I’m sure there are all sorts of thought-provoking parallells one could draw from this story, but yours truly is too tired to come up with any this evening.  However, please feel free to share your own, and maybe I’ll come up with some once I’m not so tired.

  • play in a skirt – gotta wonder what they’re wanting to play
  • find how to learn to speak slowly – dude, I’m definitely not the person to ask
  • The Unanswered Prayers – maybe Dave Barry is doing some research on a name for a new rock band?
  • wash boring identify – I’m at a loss as to what the heck these folks were trying to find
  • Zac devised a shortcut – I hope these folks figured out that Zac’s shortcut wasn’t all it was cracked up to be

AND my favorite…

  • ten test tube experiement answers – from a student at the University of Louisville, KY, which came just a few minutes after I had blogged about the ten test tube experiment I did when I was in college.

I continue to receive multiple visits from folks wanting to know how to properly address two married doctors.  Because this seems to be quite the popular topic, I feel the need to once again provide a link for those inquiring minds who want to know.   http://www.emilypost.com/etiquette/everyday/forms_of_address.htm

…the burglar alarm at work auto-arms on Friday nights much earlier than on the other days of the week.  Additionally, the alarm not only covers the doors, but there are also motion sensors in the hallways.

One thing I have to wonder about, though…  The alarm system yelled at me in both English and Spanish – should this be considered inclusion or discrimination?
